Ebook About
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “With winning candor, Jedidiah Jenkins takes us with him as he bicycles across two continents and delves deeply into his own beautiful heart.”Cheryl Strayed, author of Wild and Tiny Beautiful Things On the eve of turning thirty, terrified of being funneled into a life he didn’t choose, Jedidiah Jenkins quit his dream job and spent sixteen months cycling from Oregon to Patagonia. He chronicled the trip on Instagram, where his photos and reflections drew hundreds of thousands of followers, all gathered around the question: What makes a life worth living? In this unflinchingly honest memoir, Jed narrates his adventure—the people and places he encountered on his way to the bottom of the world—as well as the internal journey that started it all. As he traverses cities, mountains, and inner boundaries, Jenkins grapples with the question of what it means to be an adult, his struggle to reconcile his sexual identity with his conservative Christian upbringing, and his belief in travel as a way to wake us up to life back home.A soul-stirring read for the wanderer in each of us, To Shake the Sleeping Self is an unforgettable reflection on adventure, identity, and a life lived without regret. Praise for To Shake the Sleeping Self“[Jenkins is] a guy deeply connected to his personal truth and just so refreshingly present.”Rich Roll, author of Finding Ultra “This is much more than a book about a bike ride. This is a deep soul deepening us. Jedidiah Jenkins is a mystic disguised as a millennial.”—Tom Shadyac, author of Life’s Operating Manual“Thought-provoking and inspirational . . . This uplifting memoir and travelogue will remind readers of the power of movement for the body and the soul.”—Publishers Weekly

Book To Shake the Sleeping Self: A Journey from Oregon to Patagonia, and a Quest for a Life with No Regret Review :

I wish so badly that I had read these reviews before I shelled out money for this book. Early on he says he was told that this was HIS trip and he can do it any way he wants and if he takes a bus, boat, taxi, etc., it’s not cheating. I agree that he should do the trip any way he wants, HOWEVER, when your book jacket says that you cycled from Oregon to Patagonia, that’s what I want to read about. Adventure, hardships, overcoming difficult situations, perseverance, enlightenment, etc.Jed’s journey was far less noteworthy when you read that he seemed to always be on a bus, Uber, taxi, hitchhiking, boats, etc. He was rarely without cell service and access to social media, even launched a Kickstarter campaign that at last check was over $42,000.00!Jed spent weeks at a time relaxing in cities, questing for the perfect cup of coffee and probably overstaying his welcome at the various generous hosts who opened their doors to him and one begins to realize that this was just a vacation with some cycling involved and not an epic journey AND he even found a way for others to pay for it!His flight home for the holidays mid trip set him back time-wise and he even skipped a couple of countries altogether because of it. I mean WOW! How does one claim to have made a trek from Oregon to Patagonia, when you skip very large portions of it entirely?Jed seemed to be in “whine mode” for the parts of the trip he actually did and he constantly dogged on Weston, his riding partner, who I thought was a FAR more interesting character than Jed.I’m glad Jed came to terms with his sexuality, but he devoted WAAAY too much time to the subject in the book, as he did in the chapter where he summarized, at nauseam, his father’s romantic and marital history. If you want to read a book about adventure and an epic journey, choose another read or wait until Weston writes his account of the journey. This book was about as interesting as watching my uncle’s vacation slides of his trip to Muncie…
I really wanted to love this book. I followed his travels on Instagram. I enjoyed his interviews. I love a good travelogue. I enjoyed the first half of the book, but by the second half I was ready for it to be done. Good for him for taking this journey, but he’s just not that interesting. All of the religious guilt and baggage was irritating. I just wanted him to let go of it and have some wild sex, and be free. His privilege was so apparent and he didn’t seem to recognize it. I appreciated his honesty, but I found myself wanting to shake him and tell him to give his money more freely, and let go of his judgement and guilt! I found his traveling companion so much more interesting than Jed, and I can’t say that I blame him for not returning. I would give it 3 stars overall, but it was a disappointment.
